A Fabulous Example of Roman Talent: The Santa Maria in Cosmedin Fountain

cpi_88108__83975.jpg Incredible discoveries of both Christian and pagan origin have been made by archaeologists and restorers in the area around Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The well-known marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) can be seen in the portico of the basilica nearby. Built in 1719, the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain was not well known and located far from sight making it difficult to visit. For the most part, people stayed away from the area because it was a bleak and neglected part of the city. As part of a project to refurbish the piazza outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was commissioned by Pope Clement XI to design a fountain. August 11, 1717 saw the beginning of the work to put down the foundation of the church. After blessing of the first stone, medals bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were thrown into the foundation.

"Primitive" Greek Artwork: Large Statuary

Up right up until the Archaic Greeks developed the first freestanding statuary, a phenomenal triumph, carvings had chiefly been completed in walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of these freestanding sculptures were what is known as kouros figures, statues of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were considered by the Greeks to embody beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising rigidity to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, brawny, and nude. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. During the Archaic period, a big time of changes, the Greeks were developing new forms of government, expressions of art, and a larger understanding of people and cultures outside Greece. Wars like The Arcadian wars, the Spartan invasion of Samos, and other wars between city-states are indicatory of the disruptive nature of the time period, which was similar to other periods of historical upset. However, these conflicts did not significantly hinder the advancement of the Greek civilization.
