The Latest Addition to the Gardens of Chatsworth: "Revelation" Fountain

Angela Conner, the widely known British sculptor, fashioned “Revelation,” the latest addition to the decorative exterior fountains of Chatsworth. She was mandated by the now deceased 11th Duke of Devonshire to produce a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth, in 2004/5 in celebration of the Queen’s 80th birthday. “Revelation” was installed in 1999 in Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s oldest ponds. Alternatively concealing and exposing a golden globe at the sculpture’s center, the steel fountain takes the appearance of four large petals that open and close with the flow of water. Standing five meters high and five meters wide, the globe was made from metal and then coated with gold dust. The flower petals move based on the flow of water, making this installation an interesting addition to the Gardens of Chatsworth.

The Dazzling Cascade Water Feature at Chatsworth Garden

At the rear of Chatsworth House, the Cascade garden fountain creates a spectacular focal point to the gardens. For 200 yards towards the dwelling is a collection of 24 irregularly spaced stone steps stretching all the way down the hillside.

Totally gravity fed, the Cascade too is dependent on a 17th century French design. Remaining unchanged since its inception, this water fountain was originally created for the very first Duke of Devonshire in 1696. The Cascade House overlooks the fountain, where water gently moves downward. Decorated on the exterior with underwater creatures in bas-relief, the house is a small building. Water pressure to the Cascade can be boosted on special occasions, meaning the Cascade House becomes part of the Cascade sight, as water spills through conduits on its roof and from the mouths of its carved sea creatures, just before continuing all the way down the Cascade. The size of every step was made slightly different and means that the music of the water cascading fluctuates as it descends the Cascades, providing a superb and soothing accompaniment to a stroll through the gardens. This cascade was chosen in a survey, carried out by Country Life in 2004, as England'sbest water feature.

Water Fountains: An Invitation for Your Pets and Visiting Birds

Wildlife and pets are by nature drawn to bird feeders and water fountains. The truth is that birds require water to: drink, bathe and preen. Birds such as robins, thrushes, orioles, or warblers are normally attracted to the active water of fountains. Many flying creatures delight in running water instead of still water, thus making such outdoor features much more appealing than bowl shaped birdbaths. Trickling fountains which spatter water have a more detectable sound, this attracting even more birds.

Dogs love fountains as they provide another place to drink water. Dogs and cats will be outside looking out for clean water during hot weather. Consistently moving water is also going to require much less cleaning than a still bowl of water from a birdbath, which collects debris.
