Keeping Your Landscape Fountain Clean

In order to ensure that water fountains last a while, it is important to practice regular maintenance. A typical issue with fountains is that they tend to gather dirt and debris, so it is vital that you keep it free from this. On top of that, algae can be a concern, because sun hitting the water allows it to form quickly. Either sea salt, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar can be dissolved into the water to avoid this issue. Some people opt for putting bleach into the water, but the downside is that it harms wildlife - so it should be avoided. p_700__14347.jpg

An extensive cleaning every 3-4 months is recommended for garden fountains. Before cleaning, all the water must be removed. When it is empty, scrub inside the reservoir with a gentle cleanser. If there is delicate artwork, you might need to use a toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas. Do not leave any soap residue inside or on the fountain.

It is highly suggested taking the pump apart to better clean the inside and get rid of any plankton or calcium. Soaking it in vinegar for a while will make it easier to clean. If you want to eliminate build-up in your fountain, use rain water or mineral water rather than tap water, as these don’t contain any ingredients that will stick to the inside of the pump.

And finally, make sure the water level is always full in order to keep your fountain operating smoothly. Allowing the water level to get too low can cause damage to the pump - and you certainly do not want that!

The Newest Inclusion to the Chatsworth Gardens: "Revelation" Fountain

“Revelation,” the most recent addition to the decorative outdoor fountains of Chatsworth, was designed by recognized British sculptor Angela Conner. In commemoration of the Queen’s 80th birthday celebration, she was commissioned by the deceased 11th Duke of Devonshire to make a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth designed of brass and steel in 2004. Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s oldest ponds, had “Revelation” placed in 1999. Taking the shape of four large petals which open and close with the circulation of water, the steel fountain alternatively conceals and displays a golden globe at the center of the sculpture. The sculpture’s proportions are five meters in height by five meters in width and features a metallic globe finished with gold dust. This most recent fountain is an interesting addition to the Gardens at Chatsworth because the petals’ motion is totally powered by water.
